CREDO

There is no more time to waste.

I will listen to my body.

I will listen to my heart.

I will care for myself as I have cared for others.

I will discard “normal” to ensure my ability to function.

And maintain my quality of life.

I will thrive in spite of PPS by embracing who I am.

Text Box: Congressman and others honored for work with polio survivors

New Jersey Rep. Steve Rothman was honored with the David Bodian Memorial Award from the International Post-Polio Task Force in honor of his efforts to secure Social Security disability benefits for polio survivors experiencing post-polio sequelae (syndrome). Dr. Richard Bruno mentioned that Mr. Rothman led a 4-year effort to ensure that eligible polio survivors receive the benefits for which they are entitled. Former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley, actress Mia Farrow and actor David Morse are among others who were also to receive this award. In 1987, Morse convinced Sen. Bradley to advocate for the release of guidelines for post-polio survivors, which then opened the way for Social Security disability income. Mia Farrow and her son have spearheaded a letter campaign to distribute information about PPS and the importance of vaccination.
According to Dr. Bruno, Dr. Bodian is an “unsung” hero whose research in the 1940s explained how the polio virus damaged the body and set the stage for PPS. He also worked closely with Dr. Salk in developing the first polio vaccine.
